It is that time of year- Spring flowers, fuzzy bunnies, and that plastic neon green grass that multiplies into every corner of the house. Our Easter is going to be decidedly low key this year, likely one of our last without Easter hoopla for a long while. As I write this the Easter Bunny would have to borrow Santa's sleigh to make his rounds. That's right it is snowing in the middle of April! I can't believe it either.

To put myself in the spirit of Spring I thought I would dig through the archives and pull out my favorite special occasion Spring recipes. Beginning with the naturally dyed Easter eggs with botanical designs pictured above, here is a round up of ideas and inspiration that will bring daffodils to mind even if your grass is still white. read more

We have a tradition of celebrating St. Patrick's Day at our house. It might be with cupcakes, cocktails, or in this case, with a big hunk of braised beef, but come March 17th we break out the green and have some fun. Now what little (if any) Irish heritage we have is long lost. The real reason I celebrate St. Patrick's Day is because by the middle of March I'm ready to welcome any excuse for a party. Good food, Irish whiskey, crazy music? Count me in! read more

The worst Valentine's Day gift I ever received was a sticky box of candy canes leftover from Christmas. I was 13 and smack in the middle of those few years of special hell otherwise known as middle school. My small school had the brilliant idea of assigning a sort of 'secret santa' project for Valentine's Day. Everyone was randomly assigned the name of a classmate of the opposite sex and had to bring an anonymous gift on February 14th for that person. Boy-crazy and idealistic as always, I hoped that I might discover a box of chocolates, a stuffed bear, or something else romantic in my locker. Finding a box of candy canes confirmed my worst fears- no one liked me, everyone hated me, and I was going to die a lonely death by 14. (Yes, I was a bit of a drama queen!) read more

This is the season for reflections, musings, and generally looking back over the past 12 months as the calendar turns to a new year. While 2010 was an action packed, wonderful year, I must confess that I do not find myself spending much thought on the past right now. Instead all thoughts, excitement, (and a wee bit of trepidation), are focused on the year ahead. 2011 is going to be a big one for Mr. B and I as we bring a new life into the world and begin the long journey of parenthood. We both have decade-changing birthdays in 2011 and sense that this next year will be unlike any other. read more

If I close my eyes and imagine the perfect slice of prime rib it never sits alone on the plate. Nestled alongside the pink juicy meat is an ethereal creation. Not quite a roll and definitely not a muffin it is a tender-yet-chewy gravity-defying popover. Golden brown and filled with nothing but air it begs to be torn apart and pressed down into the juices on my plate. Soaking up every beefy dripping it conveys to my lips the savory pleasure of meat, bread, and herbs mixed into one fluffy bite. read more

If you are serving roast beef for Christmas dinner then it is almost inevitable potatoes will make an appearance too. We all know that beef and potatoes go together like salt and pepper but what if you add horseradish into the mix? Then the combination is a holy trinity of rich comfort food. read more

An herb crusted beef roast cut into thick juicy slices with steaming popovers and a garlic spiked au jus conjures up images of a classic white Christmas with stockings hung by the fire. The best part about a beef roast at Christmas is that it takes very little effort to prepare yet the results are worthy of celebration. read more

Little black dresses, cold martinis, swanky hors d'oeuvres- there is nothing quite like a holiday party. This year my black dress is not so little, and my martinis really will taste like water, but at least I can still do the swanky hors d'oeuvres! It is easy to feel stumped when asked to bring an appetizer to a party. You want to avoid the ever present deviled eggs or shrimp cocktails but at the same time if you go too far afield, less adventurous eaters will avoid your platter like it was grandma's fruitcake. read more

Now that Thanksgiving is over can we talk Christmas cookies? To be perfectly honest, I often find baking Christmas cookies exhausting. With all of the busyness of the holiday, taking time to bake cookies that simply bring another source of ready to eat sugar into the house is far down on my list of things to do before December 25th. Yet, without fail, there is always an office party, a cookie exchange, a visiting neighbor, or some unforeseen event that calls for cookies. read more
